Centre-based rehabilitation programme for the child labourers is one of the main components of child development programme of NRF. The children removed from the factories of RUGMARK Licensees are placed in such centres who either are orphans or are from br oken families with no possibility of family re-union or are in a very poor economic condition to support their schooling even after returning to home.
The foundation at present has two such centres known as Primary Centre and Secondary Centre. Primary Centre is used as a transit home where children are placed immediately after they are removed from the factories. They get their health checked-up, re-integrated with other children, studied about the possibility of family re-integration and education level. Apart from these activities, they start informal but intensive classes suitable to their educational level so that they can be placed to the standard of grade 3 in the Secondary Centre.
The curriculum followed by Primary Centres conducting informal classes is also formal education curriculum followed by private schools. The idea of having informal classes is to have flexibility of upgrading fast learning children more than once in a year. Children undergo counselling, orientation, and tests to find out their appropriate grade, they need to start their education with. Classes are run in-house with standard curriculum with an objective to upgrade them, as quickly as possible so that they can be enrolled in Secondary Centre with formal schooling programme or they can be re-united to their family to continue formal schooling in their communities.
